Boat Plans Butler | Seafarer Day Sailer Trailer Sailer – Part 3

Boat Plans Butler

Seamonster being hosed down

Further to Part 2 in the links section below, I would like to add that my hopes for the welfare of the Seafarer ‘Seamonster’ are being fulfilled. Today she was thoroughly cleaned, tidied and wrapped under cover for the winter. Her woodwork is to be varnished next spring. I have been informed that the owner loves her, and he will not allow (quote) ‘her to end up as scrap’.

All of this is very pleasing. She’s a classic boat, well worth preserving. She could live on for many years and be a joy to those who sail her.

Boat Plans Skiff | Matilda 20 Trailer Sailer

Boat Plans Skiff

I couldn’t resist taking photos of ‘No Worries’, a wrecked Matilda 20 trailer sailer. If the owner didn’t have any worries before she got into this state, it’s pretty clear he’s gone past worrying!

Seriously, Matilda 20s have been a success story, especially in Australia and Canada. They were designed by Robert Tucker who also drew the lines of similar small boats for amateur construction; as such they were made from plywood and they were hard-chined. Some of them were built in large numbers; for example, the Silhouette, the Caprice and the Debutante. Subsequently, later models were re-designed for professional production in GRP which lends itself better to round bilge construction; hence, boats were modified, and different manufacturers under licence added their own touches.

Plywood Boat Plans | Seafarer Day Sailer Trailer Sailer – Part 2

Plywood Boat Plans

Just under a year ago I drew attention to 48 year old ‘Seamonster’, an Alan Buchanan day sailer. She is an 18’ Seafarersingle chine GRP masthead sloop.

Last weekend I was away from home, and I had a chance of getting personal with the little boat. By getting personal, I mean being close enough to touch and caress her. I was somewhat saddened to see that she wasn’t being looked after as she deserved. A boat built in 1967, if she is to remain in good trim when laid up, must be kept under cover, which at the moment she is not. Worse still, she is close to a hedge, and fallen leaves in her cockpit are doing her no favours.

Structurally she is sound, and the external gelcoat has never been painted, apart from antifouling below the waterline. Her keel pivot bolt was renewed last year, and all her woodwork is good, but varnish has peeled off in places.

I am hoping she will be cared for by her owner, as she is a ‘living’ classic, worthy of not being left on the scrap heap to die.

Wood Boat Plans And Kits | Privateer 20 Gaff Rigged Trailer Sailer

Wood Boat Plans And Kits

When I was rowing on the River Crouch not so long ago and I came across this Privateer 20. She was designed by Norman Howard who also designed the Shipmate Senior.* The Privateer 20 is a larger version, but with a clipper bow. Both boats have centre-plates and kick-up rudders. Built by Smallcraft of Blockley in the early 1970s, the Privateer could be rigged as a sloop or as a gaff cutter. The more rakish and attractive to me is the latter. Incidentally, Tony Smith (Creeksailor) rigged his Shipmate Senior** as a gaff cutter. Apparently the conversion from Bermudan sloop turned out to be very successful.

You can learn a lot more about Privateer 20s by watching John Turner’s videos. (See Links below)
