Further to Part 2 in the links section below, I would like to add that my hopes for the welfare of the Seafarer ‘Seamonster’ are being fulfilled. Today she was thoroughly cleaned, tidied and wrapped under cover for the winter. Her woodwork is to be varnished next spring. I have been informed that the owner loves her, and he will not allow (quote) ‘her to end up as scrap’.

All of this is very pleasing. She’s a classic boat, well worth preserving. She could live on for many years and be a joy to those who sail her.

Kayak Boat Plans

Nathanael G. Herroshoff, (1848-1938) famous for his very successful America’s Cup Yachts, was the father of L. Francis Herroshoff (1890-1972) who also designed yachts. Perhaps Francis’s most iconic design was his 16’ day boat, the Haven 12 1/2, which Joel White subsequently modified to produce his own version. She differs by being wider and shallower with a centreboard.

I think both version are very attractive.

We are now beginning to settle into something of a routine albeit not what we had expected. The children have adapted to boat life much quicker and better than anticipated. After a long summer holiday playing with each other both children were ready for other company but as yet all the yachts have not converged together and I do not think that will happen until the Carribean. So to begin with we had some sibling s quabbles on board until the children realised this was it and it would be judicious to et along with the only other play mateon board. this has meant that the children have grown closer, are already more tolerant of eah other and work well as a team, thank goodness.

Schooling generally takes place in the morning straight after breakfast, lessons consist maninly of English, Maths and German, all the other subjects are coming through daily life of travelling and general knowlegde; we use every opportunity possible to engage the children. Ella has been really keen to have Mummy as teacher and although the novelty has worn off, she really concentrates and tries hard, Jacobus being two years younger is working equally hard and trying to keep up with his big sister.

Depending on what jobs John has to do on the boat, lessons take place either down below in the main area, the saloon or on deck in the cockpit. The sun has been shining ever since we arrived in Spain and Portugal and so we use the bimini cover which is attatched over the boom and hangs down as a tent like structure over the cockpit to keep s shaded - it works really well and we are already glad that we had it made before leaving the UK.

Everything on a boat takes much longer than shore life. Simple washing of dishes - no running water and cramped space make a quick job something of a mammoth task. Ella and Jacobus tend to wsh the breakfast and lunch dishes - although they take forever to do it and Jack seems to become soaked as a matter of coursse, it is one of the many jobs they have had to take on board.

Washing clothes is a huge task and not one to be relished. At Baiona ~I had let the ashing pile up and could not face the task of hand washing it al, so off to the laundrette and twenty four euros lighter I decided perhaps that a daily washing of clothes was wiser. Whilst the children clear the breakfast table and wash up, I wash the clothes in our faithful bucket and chuck it bucket! My right hand has become a dab hand at being a washing machine and Brimble has become a daily washing line - it is Jacks duty to raise and lower the line for me.

On the subject of washing we are at present staying in marinas where there are showers to agreater or lesser extent so a trek along the pontoons and we can stay clean. Jack and Ella had their first bath since leaving the UK. we plugged the drainage holes of the cockpit, filled it up with a hose pipe, added bubble bath and they splashed away for over an hour in the sunshine in Lisbon. we are very adaptable.

As we have no fridge on board, only a cool box, we have taken to daily food shopping . This has become a family outing, but as everything this takes so much longer than when we lived at home in the UK. We are all laden with rucksacks and trek to the super market or little local delis and markets to buy our purchases, we take it in turns each day to choose the evening meal; we are a true democracy! We also try to make local dishes as well as eat out in resturants: in Spain we became great at Pimento do Padron, a firm favourite. There was one memorable nnight with Big Jack. Pimentos are green chilli like peppers also known as Russian roulette, as about 1 in 10 are fiery hot. This one occassion it seemed the whole batch were mouth watering hot. Ella had tears in her eyes with uncontrollalbe laughter and Big Jack had sweat pouring down his face, who just drank more and more red wine to dampen the heat. Brimble was on fire that night. We have also bought a pressure cooker despite my reservations ( any good recepies warmly received please as our booklet is in Portugese!) so we will see what happens there. I remember twelve years ago on songbird in Porto Santo, where I write this blog post from now, we had been invited to a Swedish boat for dinner where their pressure cooker had just exploded as we climbed on board, butterbeans flew in very direction throughout the boat... We also tend to stock up on drinking water as we do not carry enough water in our water tanks for the Atlantic passage, we are stock piling.

For evening entertainment we have begun to play games, the current favourite being charades. So far the children are winning! Talking books are loved by us all and we have just completed the second Harry Potter book, we have all seven on board. You can hear a pin drop when we listen to them.

Generally we all go to bed at the same time, on such a small boat where there is little privacy,, it makes sense. The only exceptions are when we have entertained on board and in true Halsall fashion these have been boozy late affairs and on these occassions the children have gone to bed in the forepeak and have had to put up with their noisy parents and their new friends.

All in all life is great, it is absolutely the right thing to have done and we are all learning and growing together.

As expected, I had a very full day, much of it revolving around the demands of building the patio. I didn’t actually do any building work, but I disposed of unwanted earth to the local dump, bought and collected pea shingle to add to the existing hard core, and obtained a load of recycled glass in the form of artificial sand for bedding under the next lot of paving stones. I also dismembered a very heavy wooden pallet and put it into the car boot for taking to the dump tomorrow morning.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to lay a few more paving slabs tomorrow. Showers are forecast for part of the morning, but they could miss my neck of Essex completely.

It was with a little trepidation that I stepped onto the platform at Burnham-on-Crouch railway station where I was to be greeted by the owner of yacht Ladybird. My trepidation was not to do with meeting him, but with facing the fact that I was going to start a short cruise involving more than would be required of a day sail with Pike, my Iain Oughtred skiff. We would be leaving the River Crouch for a sail through the Ray Sand Channel, which would mean crossing the narrow isthmus of sand between Ray Sand and Buxey Sand. The return trip would be via the Swin Spitway at the eastern extremity of the Buxey Sand.

The Met Office Inshore Shipping Forecast for Gibraltar Point to North Foreland was: ‘SW 3, occasional rain, fair later.’ In fact, the rain came later that night when we were snugly berthed at Bradwell Marina. It continued into the early morning of Thursday, 20^thAugust.

High Water for Burnham on Wednesday 19^th was not until 15.49, which gave us ample time for getting to the yellow marker buoy from where we would sail northwards across the shallows for the Ray Sand Channel. At midday we cast off from Ladybird’s mooring at Rice and Cole and we powered clear of neighbouring boats before making sail.

We anticipated that our crossing of the sand at the shallowest point would take place about an hour before HW Burnham. There were surprisingly few boats on the move, apart from a number of Burnham scows being sailed by youngsters. The Foulness Firing Range launch was anchored off Foulness Point and red flags were displayed on the south bank indicating that firing was taking place. We already new that because periodically, there were emissions of black smoke followed by the sounds of explosions. Rather than firing rounds, it appeared that the burning off of outdated explosives was taking place.

A SW wind of force two gently wafted us over the incoming tide to give us two to two-and-a-half knots, bringing us to the all important yellow marker buoy. We arrived there a little later than planned, but that gave us the advantage of deeper water for crossing the hidden isthmus under Ladybird’s keels. We had an updated, detail chart showing two safe water buoys with vertical red and white stripes. Sure enough they were picked out by the skipper and confirmed to be so by further inspection through binoculars. They gave us reassurance that we were where we should have been. By then the wind was on ‘Ladybird’s’ port quarter and it increased in strength, possibly to a force three, giving us a good speed of over four knots. Far ahead to port there was the unmistakeable outline of Bradwell Power Station, which was very close to our planned destination at the marina.

Our course was parallel to the eastern fringes of the low-lying Dengie Peninsular. Ladybird’strack matched the zero metre line on the chart, but with the depth sounder showing four metres, giving us three metres to spare.

At the northern end of the Peninsula, beyond Tillingham Marshes, there’s the ancient landmark of St Peter’s Chapel. This historic building is a useful feature for taking compass bearings, and we used it for confirming our position in relation to Bachelor’s Spit, over which we passed with only a metre to spare - and that on a falling tide!

To avoid the ebb from the Blackwater we sailed as close as we dare to Sales Point at the entrance of the river, but beyond that, and hard on the wind, the current forced us further and further into deeper and faster flowing water. Had we not resorted to motor sailing we would have been forced to anchor until the tide or wind changed.

With only a mile to go, we furled the Genoa, started the engine and chugged into the wind, so as to arrive at Bradwell Marina in time for an evening meal. We walked a short distance to the Green Man pub where the skipper treated me to a deliciously tasty meal of fresh haddock and chips.

As is customary for me on the first night of a cruise, I did not sleep well. I fitfully slumbered, periodically waking to listen to the pitter-patter of rain and to speculate about the next day.

Unbelievably tired, I’ve made every effort to tie up loose ends, i.e., things yet unfinished and jobs requiring attention – the exception being the completion of the patio on account of persistent light rain.

Some of these jobs were small, others required more time. The most important task was preparing the Church Friends on Friday activity for the 24^th July. This will be an afternoon when attendees will be offered an opportunity of doing pictorial art.  I know there are ten more days before the meeting, but a surprising amount of detailed preparation has to be done on my part. This morning I was able to deal with the bulk of it, planning the content and nature of the activities, plus buying paper, plastic rulers and setsquares.

Now, why would I want rulers and setsquares? Let me explain:

The art activity will be centred on the theme of the Golden Section; also called the Golden Mean, the Divine Section, the Golden Cut or the Divine Proportion. Basically, it is a naturally occurring mathematical ratio of division found in nature. Some artists, designers and architects have incorporated the ratio into their creative works. Notable examples can be found in the works of the French architect Le Corbusier, the Dutch neoplastic painter Piet Mondrian and the Spanish surrealist artist Salvidor Dali.

With regard to the Golden Section; imagine a horizontal rectangle composed of a square and a vertical rectangle. The division between them is represented by a vertical line. In the case of the Golden Section, the ratio of division is 1 for the upper and lower sides of the square, and 0.618 for the upper and lower sides of the rectangle, giving a total of 1.618. Roughly this is a division of 8 units for the sides of the square and 5 units for the upper and lower sides of the rectangle. Divide 8 by 5 and you will come up with the exact ratio of 1.6.

An analysis of some of the works of Le Corbusier, Piet Mondrian and Salvidor Dali reveals that they structured them on the Golden Section. They used Golden Section divisions as frameworks for strengthening and imparting beauty to their creations.

The theme of the art work at the forthcoming Friends on Friday gathering will be the Golden Section, and for determining where to make divisions in their paintings and drawings, participants will be given rulers and setsquares.

Canoe Boat Plans | A Fiddly Day

I knew today would not be routine. First of all I had to buy sand and gravel before setting about work on the patio. Instead of routinely putting down six full-size paving slabs, I shaped pieces and fitted them into nooks and crannies.

This sort of work is very fiddly. Spaces have to be measured carefully and allowances made for mortar between adjacent slabs. Getting the mortar into some of the crevices was a bit tricky. Hence, I spent most of the day fiddling around. 

Perhaps tomorrow will be more straightforward and I’ll be able to lay six more full-size paving stones.

The urgency to finish building the patio is no longer there. Had it been, I would have worked on it this afternoon. Instead, I took the remaining old paving stones from the previous patio to my daughter’s caravan site where she intends using them for hardstanding. The remainder of the afternoon I rested on the settee while watching the BBC TV presentation of the Men’s Singles Wimbledon Tennis Final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.  I wanted Federa to win, but the world number one beat him by three sets to one.

My prospects of finishing the patio before the end of the week are reasonable, despite the forecast for unsettled weather with rain, especially on Monday, when I feel nothing will be done.

Because of having to do various things with my wife before she set off on her mini-break to Italy, this was one of those days when I could not set aside any length of time for working on the patio. I was able to collect more sand and gravel from B&Q and Wicks, and afterwards to lay down the gravel to make a more even surface at the correct height in preparation for laying sand for the next row of paving slabs. Hopefully I’ll be able to do another six slabs tomorrow, so as to bring me more than halfway through the task of laying about 65 in total.

Another little job done today was tidying a few remaining joins between infill slabs by the garden shed. The more such jobs done now, the less there will be to do later. I have a desire to finish the patio as soon as I can so that I can go sailing with Pike, but there is a chance that I may be able to have a day sail this coming Monday aboard ‘Temagani’ which would be a treat.

Boat Plans And Patterns | Father’s Day

Boat Plans And Patterns

As far as I know, there is no link between Father’s Day and the Summer Solstice, but this year they both occurred today, this Sunday, 21^stJune.

For me it was Father’s Day, rather than the day of the year with the longest daylight hours in the northern hemisphere. I received cards from my three daughters and I had the opportunity of spending part of the day with my youngest grandchildren. Temporarily, I was father to them, as their own father was unable to be with them.

They are now at an age where they are tops in a play park. Soon, on account of their increasing age, they will lose interest in climbing frames, swings and roundabouts. Therefore it was special for me to able to enjoy their pleasure as they freely played in an almost brand new park with the latest equipment. I was reminded of my own children when they were the about the same age and they loved going to the park.

It rained quite heavily this morning, but as I wasn’t intending to work on building the patio, there was no disappointment. For me to take time off from the task was a relief, but strangely, this afternoon, when the sun came out and there was a coolness and freshness to the air, I thought it would be relaxing to clean up the edges of the joins between the seven paving slabs I set in place yesterday.

In accordance with my desire for relaxation, I made a cup of tea and settled to mechanically scrape away stains on the edges of adjacent slabs. There was nothing strenuous, just a gentle jigging of the scraper, followed by rhythmic movements with the wire brush and a dusting away of the resulting powder. The sun shone, and a cool, soft wind rustled the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. I could think or dream of anything I wished.
