Boat Plans Uk | ARC Atlantic Rally for Cruisers

Boat Plans Uk

Here are a number of links that will take you to websites about this year’s Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). On Sunday, 8th November, over 60 yachts set sail from Gran Canaria for the Cape Verdes on the first stage of a 2,700 nautical mile voyage to St Lucia. Over 200 more yachts will depart from Gran Canaria on 22nd November at the beginning of a non-stop trade wind passage to St Lucia.

The Sailing Today article (last link) has a list of facts about this 30th year Celebration ARC Rally. it is interesting to note the the smallest boat has an overall length of 32 feet, and the average length is 45 feet 8 inches. 1,116 people will be taking part, 32 of them children, 16 years of age and under.

This sort of event is for gregarious sailors and perhaps the more heeled - very different in character and in spirit to the Jester Challenge* which is for solo sailors.

Wooden Boat Plans Australia | Atlantic Cup Class 40

Wooden Boat Plans Australia

This new event, in its second year is a success. To have been able to attract 15 boats on this side of the Atlantic, for what is essentially an European sort of thing is a major achievement. The double-handed race started in Charleston to New-York city, then on to Newport. I like the Class, the size, the speed, the concept. I drew one a few years ago to get a sense about the design, and the following text will give you an idea behind the thinking. I am always up dating the basic plans as time goes on to get abreast of the evolution of this class.

" The Class 40 Tango follows parameters set by the Box rule, to the maximum of all dimensions.
The result is a platform with a fine entry, a wide beam and transom. The shallow Veed stern is carried all the way forward to the mid section at a constant angle to keep the buttocks as straight and flat as possible. A true chine boat. The lines are carried towards the bow in a deep and sharp section. The overall simplicity of the hull shape hides the reasons behind everything.

The twin outboard rudders, placed well to the sides are out of the wake exit and are perpendicular to the bottom angle. In case of hitting something, the rudders swing aft, thanks to a "fuse" line built into the system.

The keel is designed to carry all of its lead into the shape of the bulb for maximum stability. The blade is designed to maximize the aspect ratio available with an optimized sweepback angle.

The sail plan represents an effort to place the mast as far aft as dictated by balancing the rig with the below  waterline appendages.

The deck pl;an, reflects the need of sailing the boat single or double handed with the necessity of getting protection from the elements.

The Accommodation Plan in its simplicity, offers a couple of options, all within the same built for strength structure.

Here we go. "

Pontoon Boat Plans | Atlantic Video at last

Pontoon Boat Plans

Apologies to Blog Followers for the delay, but after months of trying we are finally able to download the video we made crossing the Atlantic. I have had to split the film into 4 sections to download onto You Tube, if you hover your cursor over the pictures it gives you the file name which says which part that film is. If all four parts arent visible then pop onto You Tube by clicking the icon under the video bar and you should be able to watch them.

When are we going to see a ScowTa?
With the success in the last Mini Transat of the scow bowed 777, I am wondering if the same approach could be adapted for the 40 Class.
Last year, for the purpose of assessing the possibilities, I reverse-engineered David Raisons Mini to explore what he was doing?
The rules for 2013 have been changed to avoid the adoption of the Minis bow to the class 40, by the control of a maximum width of 450mm. at deck level located 200mm. aft of the stem. By dropping the width almost down to the waterline the volume is redistributed in a different way and this is the Class 40 version with the killer whale bow I am coming up with.

Boat Plans Wooden | Preparation for Atlantic Crossing 23rd November

Boat Plans Wooden

I am typing this note in a bit of a hurry in a small Internet cafe in Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Apologies for the slight hiatus in our updating the blog but as the departure date for Barbados has neared we have become increasingly preoccupied with our imminent trip and the 101 things that need (or seem to need) to be done before departure. It´s an interesting challenge dealing with the conflicting pressures that we will need to be entirely self-sufficient for close to a month but only have space on board for the bare essentials, even beer has been replaced by milk!

Our intention is to depart tomorrow bound towards Barbados and with a fair wind we hope to cover the 2800 miles in somewhere between 25 and 30 days. We have water and food (1.5 litres per person per day) for 30 days and washing is banned from tomorrow except in rain showers or over the side.

At the back end of last week we completed ´dry food´provisioning, engine servicing, boat checks etc. and we have just been to the market to buy 4 weeks worth of fruit and vegetables. The last week or so has generally been spent getting the boat ready and as ever the list of jobs feels never-ending despite the fact that we have done nothing else but work on her for the last 3 months ... still that´s boating for you. We installed a rather groovy radar transponder that Big Papa Yunus brought over and which makes sure that the sleak GSB is picked up on radar by other ships, it also notifies us audibly if we are being tracked on radar. With this invaluable bit of kit I have been able to confirm to Selma and the kids (repeatedly) that, as we sit in the marina, there are definitely vessels within 30 miles of us with radar on, they seem a little unimpressed!

As you can imagine we´re all excited and nervous at the same time and raring to go ... talk to you in a month.

Boat Plans And Kits | Atlantic Cup 2014 Class 40

Boat Plans And Kits

The Class 40 renewed their Cup for this 2014 edition.
Fewer boats, but equally good competition over the legs.
Starting in Charleston to New-York, then on to Newport.
With inshore races over the weekend, marred by the
demise of Dragon hitting a rock in the Passage.
I am fond of this Class, but like said one of the designers;
"It is so hard to get racing going in the US". Yes, for
smaller or bigger boat you still a few one offs built but
for some reason there is little grip elsewhere.
Especially for single or double handed racing events.

Next year, I believe that the new generation of Class 40 will follow the success of David Raisons Mini Transat by increaing the width at the bow within the constraint of the new adopted rule to minimize the "scow effect". I designed a 40 representative of what the breed will be like

.
