The season is launched at Newport. I understand that the show is bigger than last year. My own impressions strolling through it even before it was open, is that on the power boat side, the majority of the boats have adopted an Italian look. That on the sailboat side the appearance is more "modern" than ever, with high freeboard, chiseled lines and wide stern without forgetting double wheels.

The other show, the Brokerage Boat Show at the Shipyard is much more interesting in my view. The boats come in all sizes and shapes and if there is one thing in common is that how well maintained they all are. Of course, because you are trying to sell you have to show best  but besides that, American owners have a tendency to really care about their boats.

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise

Finally, this winter is over. And the boats are coming. The first one to appear is the three masted schooner Atlantic. The replica of the majestic William Gardner design with the same name. My friend Doug Peterson, the yacht designer had the rare privilege to reconstruct the drawings from files, a dream come true to be associated with such a project. For historical memory, the original Atlantic won the Kaisers Cup in 1905 by crossing the ocean for which she was named in twelve days-a record held for 75 years.

The second boat to arrive at the Shipyard was the 73 Sparkman & Stephens design Bolero, after a season in Florida. John Nicholas Brown had her built in 1949, the largest ocean racer launched after WW11. He kept her for six years and after a long career, with a recent rebuilt, this Classic yacht looks just as good as new. Mr. Browns mansion is now the location for the New York Yacht Club Newport station since 1988.

A little side story.
Probably better described in an article I wrote a few years ago, about a design I wanted to rival with the best looking boats of the Bolero, CCA Classic era. But maybe, I ought to start with the following brief .
Mr. M. commissioned the design. Preliminary plans were drafted for a carbon-deck construction, with the idea of using modern materials and techniques to build a Classic. So, what happened is that after receiving results of several bids, the client became uneasy about the money and time involved. The project was halted all together and the client took refuge in a smaller boat. Now to the published article.

Boat Plans At Mystic Seaport

Newport was the Americas Cup battleground for generations. The competition against sailing nations was the motive. The sailing boats involved, were the best that Traditional Yachting could offer at the time.

Now its all different. Last week, in the sailing Capital of the world, the lethal weapon of choice became 45 catamarans zipping along the Narragansett bay. Close to the Fort Adams which never fired a shot. Great spectacle, offered to a public of over 60000 people who came to see sailboat racing over the few days of the competition. That is a first in Newport, I think. All good for the sport.

I very much enjoyed the show, and being practical about Americas Cup venues, I applaud at anything to get the "Old Mug" going for a long time. 

But for me, the Americas Cup was a "Victorian Affair". Important, were the Nationalist aspects, when designers, builders, manufacturers had to represent the best of the respective countries challenging for the Cup.

A little side story. When I was working for Andre Mauric, the French architect, in the first of Baron Bich Challenges for the Cup; there was little known about the design of a Twelves-Metre Yacht.

Intrepid had won the previous Americas Cup and was a breakthrough 12M. Of course, the plans were not made available to us.

Therefore, in order to reproduce the boat, to establish a set of data, we went about to redesign Intrepid based on the Rating Certificate and 2000 photos.

Most people do not realize that just about every boats in the North East are out of the water during the winter season. May first arrives and the moorings have been serviced, taxes paid and ready to go. The ritual of getting the boats in and out is a serious business with a captive audience to please.
Then there is the arrival of the ones that have spent the winter down South, be Florida or down the Islands. They start to migrate back after the last hurray of the racing scene at Antigua.
I took the photo yesterday and the Newport Shipyard has already quite a few boats to be seen.

Newport based schooner sails to Haiti, houses relief physicians.

The 160 private charter boat, based in St. Thomas in the winter, was chartered by a Seattle Foundation building Hospitals around Port of Prince.

The Arabella, can sleep up to 30 guests in her 20 cabins. Serving as a floating hotel for 20 physicians for the nine days mission.

Arabella, originally Centurion; designed by McLear and Harris, burnt and capsized in 1996 in Florida. A total loss, the 90 yacht was acquired by Don Glassie and Atlantic Stars and Hotels. Over a period of a few years, the boat was cut in half and a middle piece was inserted, to enlarge the vessel to her present size.

Few places in the world where you can see so many boats with very tall masts; all painted white.
I think the Sail and Power Boat Show was smaller this year, not too surprising, while the second hand market was full of very large sailboats for sale, not surprising either. Quite a display as a matter of fact and I had the pleasure to see again old Brokers friends pushing hard quality  merchandise.
I am not fond of Boat Shows for new boats; it is actually depressing. The present form of going on the water is more alike buying a condo, yes here and there you pick one idea or two, mostly from a construction detail which I like, but the rest is plastiky. It might  also be because I do not have boats in shows anymore, yes this must be it!
A little side story.
After a Newport Show, taking slowly the boat back to my mooring under power and reaching a point  half way in the harbor, my eyes caught something white bobbing around in the water. Approaching, I notice a mooring buoy with its pennant obviously separated from its supposed  location. Surprise, my number 722 displayed on the side. Now it is clear that given a few hours one way or the other this incident could have turned into a disaster. Luck, destiny, what?

                                                               When are we going to see a ScowTa?

With the success in the last Mini Transat of the scow bowed 777, I am wondering if the same approach could be adapted for the 40 Class.

Last year, for the purpose of assessing the possibilities, I reverse-engineered David Raisons Mini to explore what he was doing?

The rules for 2013 have been changed to avoid the adoption of the Minis bow to the class 40, by the control of a maximum width of 450mm. at deck level located 200mm. aft of the stem. By dropping the width almost down to the waterline the volume is redistributed in a different way and this is the Class 40 version with the killer whale bow I am coming up with.

With the opening of the "Village" at Fort Adams.

They arrived on the 6th. with a dramatic finish; teeth and nails between Dong Feng and Abu Dhabi. The former wining by .. Talking about timing, I found this interesting close finishes of the past.

(If I can find it again).

I started but waited for the end. In between, the Newport Stop-Over was a huge success. Over 100, 000 enthusiasts showed up during the Stay. As a Newporter, I can tell you that it is the first time that many concerns got involved with skin in the game. From the State of R.I, the City and more importantly the Individuals led by Brad Read. The shore filled with people for the Inshore race leading to the start of the Transatlantic crossing to Lisbon; 500 + boats showed up on this beautiful day. Sailing knowledge in Newport R.I is no secret, sailing is in no doubt and this time we got the crowd.

In case you are wondering about the video. We had our own close encounter. While being inside the security/ safety boats zone, Mapfre came on charging through. I guess the red marker was not part of the course. She won the inshore Race.
