Most people do not realize that just about every boats in the North East are out of the water during the winter season. May first arrives and the moorings have been serviced, taxes paid and ready to go. The ritual of getting the boats in and out is a serious business with a captive audience to please.
Then there is the arrival of the ones that have spent the winter down South, be Florida or down the Islands. They start to migrate back after the last hurray of the racing scene at Antigua.
I took the photo yesterday and the Newport Shipyard has already quite a few boats to be seen.

I should have gone for a sail today. Instead, after taking my wife to a garden centre, I went to Burnham for a walk by the river to see activities associated with Burnham Week. This always starts on August Bank Holiday Saturday.

As usual, when visiting Burnham, I took a look at boats for sale at Clark and Carter. However, this fin keel Freedom 21 doesn’t look as if she is for sale, as I didn’t see a notice to that effect attached to her hull, and I couldn’t find her on the C & C ‘Yachts for Sale’ list.

Freedom 21 sailboats were first built in the US in 1982. Designed by Garry Hoyt, they were rigged with an un-stayed flexible mast and a fully battened mainsail; plus a unique spinnaker system invented by Garry. He calls it the Hoyt Gun Mount. It consists of a spinnaker pole that passes through a tube mounted on a spindle attached to the pulpit. The pole can be shunted to and fro when changing tack. The spinnaker is easily hoisted and taken in by a solo sailor. He can hoist it with a halyard and lower it into a ‘sock’ by means of a downhaul. (See Freedom 21 Demo Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx7bMnQgRoY) This cat rig has the advantage of ease of reefing as with a junk rig, but with the windward efficiency of a Bermudan rig. All control lines are led to the cockpit for speedy and safe handling without the crew having to go on deck.

I MENTIONED to a friend that I thought I could sail an 11-foot Mirror dinghy across an ocean if I had to. I mean, if the bigger yacht sank, and I were left with the tender, a Mirror.

You may think me rather boastful, as my friend did, but I have had a lot of experience with Mirrors and I also have a great respect for the seaworthiness of small dinghies in general.

Some time back I helped construct a seaworthiness quiz for Small Craft Advisor magazine. The quiz was designed to give the owners of small sailboats a reasonable idea of how seaworthy various designs might be. And, perhaps more importantly, it demonstrated for them the desirable qualities that add up to seaworthiness in very small craft.

But now and then someone comes along and says: "What were you thinking? How can such small boats be seaworthy?" Well, they say that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and that’s what most of these someones are equipped with.

It’s quite obvious that dinghies and their ilk can’t meet all the qualities necessary to claim seaworthiness for larger vessels, ones that can accommodate people in the shelter of a cabin. But sailing dinghies can indeed provide two of the most important qualities: to stay afloat and to keep their crews alive.

If these someones had done their homework, they’d know that tiny open boats have made remarkable ocean voyages that demonstrate their seaworthiness. I could mention Captain Bligh, for a start, and Webb Chiles, who singlehandedly sailed his open, 17-foot, Drascombe Lugger, Chidiock Tichborne, almost all of the way around the world. And then there was Frank Dye, who sailed his 16-foot Wayfarer dinghy hundreds of miles across the North Sea from Scotland to Iceland, and to Norway.

These sailors provided an element of seaworthiness that their small craft lacked, of course. They were all expert seamen. In fact, when faced with storms at sea, Dye, in his unballasted, centerboard dinghy, would take the mast down, set a sea anchor so that the boat faced into the oncoming seas, and then lie down on the floorboards and go to sleep. “There’s nothing much else to do,” he said. Except pray, perhaps.

In coastal cruising, much of the seaworthiness of a dinghy like the Wayfarer lies in its ability to run for shelter close inshore, to maneuver closely among rocks, and to land on a beach and be pulled up out of harm on inflatable rollers. Larger, less nimble yachts with deep keels would not dare close a shore like that in heavy weather; their only recourse then is to seek deep water offshore, where their seaworthiness will be well tested.

In at least one way, the smaller the sailing dinghy, the more seaworthy it is. That is when the worst happens and the boat capsizes. The smaller the boat, the easier it is for the crew to right her.

The well-found camp-cruising dinghy cannot sink — she has built-in buoyancy. With a sealed mast and boom for flotation, she cannot turn completely turtle, and so the crew can stand on the centerboard to right her. She will also have self-bailers that will draw all the water from the cockpit once she comes upright again and gains way.

So there’s no doubt in my mind that small boats can be seaworthy. They can’t provide the shelter and comfort of a larger vessel, admittedly, but their closeness to the water provides delicate insights and thrills unknown to those lofty someones who batter their way through the seas in their seaborne chariots, carefully insulated from both the sea’s danger and its intimate secrets.

This is a highly attractive ‘pocket rocket’, a term used by Yachtsnet in their data section. (See first link below.) If one is looking for a boat with exciting performance and at the same time the ability to coastal cruise, this little job may be the answer.

A lot of thought has gone into making her a practical yacht in terms of ergonomics, i.e., her efficient functional properties.  She has slab reefing for the mainsail and a furling, non-overlapping jib for easy tacking and control of sail area. With a fantastic ballast ratio and a deep keel providing lateral and directional stability, she should make to windward better than many yachts of her size. She has the added advantage of being able to dry out level on her raised keel and dual rudders. Dual transom hung rudders allow for the placing of an outboard motor on the centreline where it is most efficient and it can be used on both tacks when motor-sailing - though I doubt this situation will be required, except under special circumstances.

She is a highly practical small yacht for a crew of two, each of whom can sleep in the main cabin on berths either side, that extend into the quarters. There’s room for two children up forward in a double ‘v’ berth. Not everyone will like the chemical toilet under the companionway step, but there it is easily accessed, unlike many small yachts that have their chemical loos tucked away under the forward ‘v’ berth. The self-draining cockpit has sensible seating with good back support and lockers underneath for warps, fenders, etc.

I’ve owned a variety of boats, usually one a time, excluding tenders. The benefits of owning one boat at a time are clear: You can only sail one at a time. If you have two or more, you have to maintain them, store them and preferably use them. Your expenses increase with every extra boat you own. Unless you have free storage space, keeping more than one can seriously increase your expenses - worst of all, your anxieties increase. When a fierce gale rages, you wonder if moorings will hold, and you are not satisfied until you have seen for yourself.

The same principle of the less you have the better, not only applies to boat ownership, but to all possessions. Obviously, I’m not referring to the basic necessities of life. We all require, shelter, food and clothing, and in a country such as ours, the UK, we want warmth in our homes during the winter months.

Some would say a car is a necessity, especially if they want the freedom to come and go as they please; although today, with the volume of traffic on our roads, there is no guarantee that you are going to get to where you want without hindrance because of congestion. What has been happening in Kent recently, because of countless lorries parked on the M20 due to an immigrant crisis at Calais and striking French ferry crews, is a motorist’s nightmare.

Early this year, my wife and I set about getting rid of things we didn’t use* – the sort of rubbish that accumulates in our loft. That process of shedding possessions has been ongoing, but no sooner than we shed, we accumulate! We’ve recently gained a number of possessions – things like a new patio and garden furniture, and of course, ‘Pike’, my Iain Oughtred skiff. Yesterday, I explained how I cared for the boat and how I was working on her to make her watertight. She requires effort and attention, if she is not to deteriorate.

Today, we had the eucalyptus tree cut down and taken away to simply our lives. The tree was lovely to look at, but what a pain it was, because of falling leaves and detritus in the form of twigs and bark, not to mention birds’ whatsit! All of this muck had to be swept off the patio on a regular basis.

Would you believe it? The workmen made a horrendous mess by marking the patio with resin stains from branches as they dragged them away. In turn, these marks ruined the appearance of the patio; so they had to be removed. The only remedy that worked was to apply bleach, and wire brush the affected areas.

I go back to the principle stated in the second paragraph, “The less you have the better.” -  Not forgetting the qualification about having the basic necessities of shelter, food and clothing. Why are we never satisfied? Why do we always want more?

Boat Blind Plans | A Reality Check According to Boats Owned

Today I had an email from a friend who told me that ‘Zeta’ was for sale. I owned two boats with that name. The smaller of them is for sale; the other was wrecked on the far side of the Atlantic.*

Looking at the advert and the associated photographs, I was reminded of times I had sailed the little boat. Memories that came to mind were of sailing her to Holland when she was first rigged as a Bermudan sloop. My wife and our youngest daughter joined me at Amsterdam for a cruise of the inland waterways. We had a fantastic time.

Another occasion was far from fantastic. I was caught in a gale in the middle of the English Channel between shipping lanes north and south. The worst of the gale came in the middle of the night. The experience was frightening and very physical. At one point I was sitting on the floor, wedged between the side bunks, but I couldn’t stop myself from being thrown onto one of the bunks by the severe motion.

There was also the time I tried taking a shortcut around Start Point by keeping close to the rocks. We got caught on the edge of the race, and waves came over the boat, completely filling her cockpit. She continued sailing as if nothing had happened, but it took a good many minutes for the water to exit through a single drain hole at the rear of the cockpit.

The advert for the sale of ‘Zeta’ has made me think how fortunate I have been to have owned her and others like her. By clicking links below you can see photos of most of them.

Importantly, the advert has made me realize how old I am. I bought ‘Zeta’ in 1977 – that’s 38 years ago! Facts are facts, and the reality is that I am no longer the chap I was. No matter how much I would like to buy ‘Zeta’, realistically, I could not do the sort of things I did with her in the past, and like other ‘old gaffers’, I can only reminisce, for as long as I can.

Because of a posting at Dylan’s Keep Turning Left website* my attention has been drawn to the Shell Boats range of shallow draught sailing craft. I have had the opportunity over a period of 10 years to design many so called "Lobster Yachts".  In size range from 36 to 40 feet. About one every year; they are good boats and people liked them.
Then all of sudden in 2008 the market dropped under us. The final draw happened when we had to cancel an operation due to start in China. It was a wise decision considering than since then not one non-commercial boat has been sold. So what went wrong ? And why such good boats are not taking of again with a slightly better economic climate?

To give you an idea of what the Lobster yacht is all about, here are condensed words from the brochure.

"Good classic looks with flare and tumblehome. Seaworthy and stable. Smooth and comfortable. Very efficient S-bilged hull with no speed bump that needs extra horsepower. Fast and economical with a single engine and no box over the cockpit sole. Protected propeller and rudder."

 All combined in designs evolved from 100 years of working the sea all day long and transformed into exceptional versatile yachts. What is there not to like about it?

 

A little side story.

The above rendering is by Stephen L. Davis who passed away not too long ago. He was the best of the best illustrators and over the years did a lot of brushing for Tyd. Some  examples.
