Boat Plans And Patterns | Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Boat Plans And Patterns

Yachting is a very broad church. Those who take part in this sport are diverse, ranging from the loner who choses his particular modus operandi, perhaps sailing a ditch-crawler PD (Puddle Duck) Gorfnik,* to the highly competitive, super-human, who can only be satisfied by racing the latest high-tech yacht, to boot, around the world. In between, there are dinghy sailors who race or cruise, yachtsmen and yachtswomen who love pottering, day sailing, and cruising, and those who engage in a host of other sailing activities, involving both amateurs and professionals alike.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race attracts people who want to be tested to the limits of their endurance, and yet, according to the organisers, they are,‘ordinary, everyday people’. They say there is no need for a background of sailing - applicants must have a desire to join a group adventure, and be part of a highly competitive team who will face difficult and very testing conditions as they race around the world aboard a purpose-built 70’ yacht.

There is a vigorous training programme for potential participants who can elect to join one or more legs of the race - or even race all the way round the world. Twelve, virtually identical yachts, are skippered by competent professional sailors whose task, along with specialists at the outset, is to train and prepare crews for their arduous adventure. Having been trained, the yachts and their crews are tested by competing in a six day offshore race before taking part in the real thing.

Commitment, strength, endurance and team spirit are essential, not just to win, but to bring yachts home safely. There are point penalties for loss of gear, sails, and damage to equipment; therefore skippers and watch leaders have to ensure their yachts are being sailed without taking undue risks. Sadly, shortly after the start of his year’s race, a yachtsman, Andrew Ashman, aboard CV 21, was fatally injured. This was the first and only fatality since the inception of the Race in 1995. The Race is not without risk.

As I write, the leading yacht of leg 3, LMAX Exchange, is only a few hours away from the Wardan Whip finish line, SW Australia.

Boat Plans At Mystic Seaport | NEWPORT USA Americas Cup World Series

Boat Plans At Mystic Seaport

Newport was the Americas Cup battleground for generations. The competition against sailing nations was the motive. The sailing boats involved, were the best that Traditional Yachting could offer at the time.
Now its all different. Last week, in the sailing Capital of the world, the lethal weapon of choice became 45 catamarans zipping along the Narragansett bay. Close to the Fort Adams which never fired a shot. Great spectacle, offered to a public of over 60000 people who came to see sailboat racing over the few days of the competition. That is a first in Newport, I think. All good for the sport.
I very much enjoyed the show, and being practical about Americas Cup venues, I applaud at anything to get the "Old Mug" going for a long time.
But for me, the Americas Cup was a "Victorian Affair". Important, were the Nationalist aspects, when designers, builders, manufacturers had to represent the best of the respective countries challenging for the Cup.

?
A little side story. When I was working for Andre Mauric, the French architect, in the first of Baron Bich Challenges for the Cup; there was little known about the design of a Twelves-Metre Yacht.
Intrepid had won the previous Americas Cup and was a breakthrough 12M. Of course, the plans were not made available to us.
Therefore, in order to reproduce the boat, to establish a set of data, we went about to redesign Intrepid based on the Rating Certificate and 2000 photos.

At 600 M. above sea level, the views taken with the raising sun show straight across the mountains of Corsica. The town of Cannes is slightly down to the right. Bellow is the Ville de Grasse.

Boat Plans Bruce Roberts | Yachting World 5 Tonner designed by Robert Clark

Boat Plans Bruce Roberts

Robert Clark first made his mark in the early 1930s by designing his 39’ Mystery Class* cutter, a very successful crusier/racer, much praised by Dr. T. Harrison Butler in a Yachting Monthy magazine writeup. A number of them were built at Sussex Yacht Works, Shoreham, before World War Two.

Robert is also famous for designing ocean racing yachts for single-handers such as Francis Chichester’s ‘Gypsy Moth lll’ and Geoffrey Williams’s ‘Sir Thomas Lipton’, both participating in the Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Races. He also designed Chay Blyth’s ‘British Steel’ that Chay sailed non-stop from east to west around the world against the prevailing winds. His boats were competitive in the Admiral’s Cup races, notably ’Jocasta’ in 1957 and ‘Caprice of Huon’, in 1965 and 1967. Not content with that he designed the standard 70’ Ocean Youth Club’s training vessels.

With regard to Clark’s Yachting World 5 Tonner, she’s a bit different, being designed for coastal cruising and occasional racing. Smaller and with a transom, she lacks the elegance of his larger yachts, but she has a good turn of speed and impeccable handling. You need only see her out of the water to appreciate her slippery lines. You know her average cruising speed will be at least 4 knots to the delight to those aboard. With metacentric balance she’s going to be light on the helm. She’s what you would call a ‘proper’ yacht, stoutly built by Robert King of Burnham from teak and mahogany on steamed oak timbers or by Carnell Brothers of Maylandsea, from pitch pine and larch on oak. Her long, cast iron keel gives ample stability and holds her on course. Sleek lines aft leave hardly a trace by way of a wake, save for a few ripples, soon lost in the vastness of the ocean. Her deep cockpit, high coamings, wide side decks, guardrails, pulpit and pushpit are all excellent safety features.

Down below in the warm glow of her varnished wooden cabin there are two settee berths, one either side of a centrally fixed folding table. There’s a quarter-berth opposite a well-equipped galley to starboard with a gimballed twin burner paraffin cooker and a sink with pumped freshwater. Under her companionway there’s a reliable Stuart Turner 11 HP Sole diesel engine. Forward of the mast in the forepeak, there’s a Baby Blake sea toilet with a ventilation hatch above.

As she is driven by the wind, her helmsman has every confidence in her fractional sloop rig. (Some were rigged as cutters.) The smallish jib is easily sheeted by the use of winches, and her generous main is reefed by rotating the boom. Running backstays help support the well-stayed wooden mast. (Some YW 5 Tonners were given bowsprits and bumpkins with fixed backstays.)

Boden Boat Plans Australia | Sail the world on the cheap

Boden Boat Plans Australia

LET’S SAY YOU’VE GOT the Walter Mitty dream. You’re itching to take three years off work and sail around the world. Never mind the reasons. What would it cost? How much would you have to pay for a boat that could take you, or two of you, or even three, around the world? Did you say $50,000? $75,000?  Was that $100,000?

Well, there’s one for sale right here, right now, in Puget Sound, for $16,000. She’s called Phoenix and she belongs to John Jannetty, of Vashon Island, Washington.  She’s a gorgeous-looking 35-foot sloop, launched in 1989. She’s a Colin Archer type with a full keel and attached rudder. She’s as rugged as they come, with all-bronze fittings from the famous Port Townsend Foundry, and the looks of a boat that was born for the ocean.

Why $16,000? Because she’s wooden. Because that’s the perception of her worth by people who don’t know boats. In my view, wood is the ideal boat-building material, and even more so for boats likely to make long voyages abroad. You can fix almost anything on a wooden boat with a few simple tools. Or you can get it fixed at reasonable prices by skilled woodworkers in foreign ports. And think about this: if you want to fix something to a wooden boat, inside or outside, a simple nail or screw will do the trick. You can’t do that with fiberglass. It becomes a major kerfuffle then.

Phoenix was built by a master craftsman at Upright Boatworks on Lopez Island. He used cedar for the planking and oak for the frames. Cedar, of course, is light and strong. Better still, it’s very resistant to rot.

Phoenix has a diesel engine that would be regarded by many “experts” as too small, a 10-horsepower Saab.  But what do the “experts” know? The Hiscocks sailed around the world in a boat that was probably much heavier, and they had a 4-horsepower engine. Some people, like the Pardeys, don’t have engines at all.

There are advantages to small engines. You can start this Swedish-built Saab by hand, for example. It has that lovely old-fashioned heavy flywheel to even out the vibrations, and there is space all around it, so much space that you can actually get to every part of it without having to hang upside down by your toes from a hatch in the cockpit. Furthermore, she’s raw-water cooled, just like an outboard motor. No fresh-water secondary cooling system to go wrong. What could be simpler? And what more evocative than the noise it makes? Ker-pluff, ker-pluff, ker-pluff. It’s just magic.

John Jannetty admits Phoenix has some faults. Bits of her are in need of a lick of paint. And her bilge pump has stopped working through lack of use. There’s probably some dust in the bilges. But how bad can that be?

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.

Nonchalance — the ability to look like an owl when you have just behaved like an ass.
