Boat Plans And Patterns | Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Boat Plans And Patterns

Yachting is a very broad church. Those who take part in this sport are diverse, ranging from the loner who choses his particular modus operandi, perhaps sailing a ditch-crawler PD (Puddle Duck) Gorfnik,* to the highly competitive, super-human, who can only be satisfied by racing the latest high-tech yacht, to boot, around the world. In between, there are dinghy sailors who race or cruise, yachtsmen and yachtswomen who love pottering, day sailing, and cruising, and those who engage in a host of other sailing activities, involving both amateurs and professionals alike.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race attracts people who want to be tested to the limits of their endurance, and yet, according to the organisers, they are,‘ordinary, everyday people’. They say there is no need for a background of sailing - applicants must have a desire to join a group adventure, and be part of a highly competitive team who will face difficult and very testing conditions as they race around the world aboard a purpose-built 70’ yacht.

There is a vigorous training programme for potential participants who can elect to join one or more legs of the race - or even race all the way round the world. Twelve, virtually identical yachts, are skippered by competent professional sailors whose task, along with specialists at the outset, is to train and prepare crews for their arduous adventure. Having been trained, the yachts and their crews are tested by competing in a six day offshore race before taking part in the real thing.

Commitment, strength, endurance and team spirit are essential, not just to win, but to bring yachts home safely. There are point penalties for loss of gear, sails, and damage to equipment; therefore skippers and watch leaders have to ensure their yachts are being sailed without taking undue risks. Sadly, shortly after the start of his year’s race, a yachtsman, Andrew Ashman, aboard CV 21, was fatally injured. This was the first and only fatality since the inception of the Race in 1995. The Race is not without risk.

As I write, the leading yacht of leg 3, LMAX Exchange, is only a few hours away from the Wardan Whip finish line, SW Australia.

Boat Plans Pdf | San Diego Yacht Club Hot RUM Series

Boat Plans Pdf

This year the "Hot RUM Series" had 130 entered boats, in six classes.
Velos is a Tanton 73 based in San Diego.
The 28 years old girl is still going strong, but it is all about the wind. For instance. First race: positions, first in class, 8 in fleet. Second race: very light wind. Only 57 boats finished and Velos ended up 28. Third race: nice breeze; Velos, first to finish and first in fleet.
It is hard to have a career based on the vagaries of the wind !
Suspense of the finish between Velos and Dennis Conners Stars and Stripes.

Boat Plans And Kits | Leisure 18 Yacht

Boat Plans And Kits

Approximately 4,500 Leisure branded yachts were built between 1967 and 1995, with a variety of designers being involved in producing a range of boats: L17, L17SL, L18, L20, L22, L23, L23SL, L24, L26, L27, L27SL, and the L29.

The Leisure 18 was designed by Simon Cory, and they were built by Brian Cory Boatbuilders Ltd., Sandwich, Kent, CT13 9LY. Very few were sold on account of the exorbitant cost of production because of having to satisfy the RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) requirements and the state of the market in 1970 when she was first built. High production costs inevitably precluded profitability which brought the demise of the venture.

I personally think this was very sad, because on the face of it, the Leisure 18 was well designed for its purpose, i.e., for short-handed cruising and for weekending. The standard boat had three full-size berths, a separate heads, and a galley with a two-burner stove and a sink. There was also a four berth version based on the same one- piece moulded hull with integral twin keels and a skeg mounted rudder. Her shallow draught of only 2’ 3” made her suitable for estuary ramblings and for exploring tidal creeks. There was the option of an outboard in a well or an 8 HP Saildrive diesel engine.

Some would describe her as a trailer sailer, but she’s really a yacht that would most likely have her own mooring, and yet she is small enough to be transported on a road trailer for that special summer cruise.

Pontoon Boat Plans | Otter Week – Royal Corinthian Yacht Club

Pontoon Boat Plans

From what I saw as a spectator, the Otter Week organized by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club made a great start today. Conditions couldn’t have been more perfect.

Otter Week, this year runs from 9th to 14thAugust, and it is for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18 years. There’s a very full programme of events, not just sailing, but activities that would excite and reward those taking part, such as bowling, fancy dress, and an inflatable event. On top of that there’s a roast hog meal, and an Izumi oriental meal. The kids will have a fantastic time.

Boat Plans Bartender | Twister Yacht Designed by Kim Holman

Boat Plans Bartender

In view of recent comments about popular yacht designers and their designs, I think it’s worth revisiting some of their classic yachts.

The first for consideration is C. R. ‘Kim’ Holman (1925-2006) who must have designed well over 50 yachts, many of them built by different yards in various places around the world. My favourites are his Stella and the Elizabethan 29 and the Twister 28, but by far the most desirable for me is the Twister 28.

If there’s anyone who wants a Twister and can afford one (unlike me), there’s no shortage of them on the secondhand market. You need look no further than the Twister Class Associations website* to find details of 14 for sale (at the time of writing) ranging from a 1984 GRP version at £28,000 to a 1964 wooden original at £14,000.

Wooden Boat Plans And Kits | Praise for Legacy Yacht Sales!

Wooden Boat Plans And Kits

Malcolm McRobert of Legacy Yacht Sales

When I recently decided to sell my little Flamenca "Quest", I elected to use Legacy Yacht Sales. For no particular reason than I bought her from Carl Olivier who started this company, and he turned out to be a good guy. Subsequently, Carl sold the business to Malcolm McRobert, with whom I had had some email exchanges on boat details previously. Malcolm seemed like a very decent bloke although I had never met him personally. I was keen to use a broker because they serve a very useful role as intermediary in the transaction, which makes it objective, safe and efficient. And so it was....

Due to the market being very low, and despite a steady stream of nibbles via the website etc, it was clear we would have to drop the price somewhat. We did eventually sell her (Quest) at about 20% less than the asking price. On account of this, Malcolm was very conciliatory regarding the commission - I wont spell it out in case someone thinks its a precedent! - but on account of the great service I insisted we stick to the original terms at 10%. Now even at 10% on such a small boat, its a lot of work for a broker. Paperwork was efficiently handled thanks to email and scanners etc. It was a dead-easy experience for me.

The proceeds of the sale were transferred promptly and in fact Malcolm even arranged to skipper the delivery of the boat up to Saldanha himself. Thats 120% service as I see it. I am sure the buyer would offer similar views.

I must add I have no reason to doubt the service of the other brokers in town, but in this case I just happened to use Legacy, and would gladly use them again.

Plywood Boat Plans | Yacht Self Steering Gear Monitor

Plywood Boat Plans

After two or three weeks at the helm its always nice to pop down below, stick the kettle on, have a bite to eat and a quick wee. But if you still havent made it to your destination this raises a big question .. who will steer?

Many singlehanded long distance yachtsmen have put their great minds to resolving this conundrum and have landed on some great solutions; the most popular is the servo-pendulum self steering gear.

Its super-great but how does it work? Let me see if I can explain with some words, a picture and a video of the good ship Bs self steering in action:

The Words
The servo rudder hangs off the back of the boat in the water and is able to rotate in a vertical plane (1) but can also swing sideways like a clock pendulum (2).

When the boat drifts of course this rudder rotates on its vertical axis (1). Water flow will then force the rudder to swing (like a pendulum) to one side or the other (2).

Ropes are connected from to the servo pendulum rudder to the wheel or tiller and so as soon as the boat goes a little off course the tiller moves to adjust (3).

The vertical rotation of the servo rudder is determined by a windvane (4). Clever gearing transfers the side to side movement of the windvane to spin the servo rudder on it vertical axis (5)

The windvane is set up so that when the boat is on course it is upright and therefore the servo rudder is in a neutral position. When the boat drifts off course the wind vane leans to one-side, this rotates the servo rudder on its vertical axis, water flow pushes it to one side, the yacht direction changes, the wind vane returns to a neutral position, the servo rudder returns to a neutral position and the ships helm returns to a neutral position. Easy.

The Picture

The Video

The only downside of this gear is that it does need the boat to be moving and you do need wind otherwise the vane wont tip over. So, if the faithful donkey is being used (and you dont have the bladder of an Ox) then you might also consider a mechanical tiller pilot for calm days.
I suppose the other point to mention is that this gear does not steer a specified course, it steers in a direction relative to the apparent wind. So if the apparent wind direction changes then the course changes. If you dont notice this then your journey will be slightly extended. Hey ho, were not in a rush.

There are lots of different self steering manufacturers. Most people are passionate advocates about their own! So on that basis its probably no surprise that I believe the best is the Monitor. This sailed us pretty much the whole way across the Atlantic .. twice, up into the Arctic and is great even on all day sails along the coast.

Monitor are made by Scanmar which is an American company based out of Richmond, California. These guys deliver just the best customer service. Each Monitor is handmade for each boat and whilst they have developed standard designs for different types of boat it really feels like youre having your own bespoke bit of kit made for you ... its like having a handmade suit ... well I imagine thats what its like because Ive never actually had a handmade suit ... but I have had a handmade self steering gear ... and Id rather have a handmade self steering gear than a handmade suit .. so thats alright  .. anyway we digress .. the point is they look after you. When youre Monitor arrives it even comes with an electronic egg timer to remind you to keep a look out every hour or so; this is also handy for cooking.

Most yachtsman name their self steering systems, so in our case shes called Minnie (there is a rather good song called Minnie the Mermaid that I can commend which is where our Minnies name has come from - click here to enjoy Minnie the Mermaid). Inevitably most Aries Self Steering systems are rather crudely named Pubes ... yes, Im afraid so!
