Once in a while I have the good surprise to receive photos and now often videos about boats I have designed, some a long time ago. This is the case of "Belle Ile", this nostalgic "Colin Archer" built in steel with the twist of having twin keels limiting the draft to 4-3".

 

 

As a coincidence, I just sold a set of plans of this seaboat, the 34th. to Canada. I wrote in a previous article about Belle Ile, that in times of trouble people are again attracted to simple, solid, safe and not so slow type of escape machine.

if you are a member of the dinghy cruising fraternity you will have heard of Frank Dye, who, with Russell Brockbank in 1963, sailed a Wayferer dinghy from Kinlochbervie, Scotland to the Icelandic Island of Heimaey. That’s a trip of over 600 miles across open water. The following year, he and Bill Brockbank - not related to Russell - sailed the same Wayfarer from Scotland to Norway via the Faroe Islands. Gales were encountered on both passages, the worst being a force 9 during the Norwegian passage. The Wayfarer capsized, and her mast was broken, but after temporary repairs Frank and Bill made it to land. This was a remarkable feat of survival and endurance.*

I am convinced that there are few dinghy cruising sailors who would willingly undertake open sea passages of this nature. Without a doubt, the majority prefer camp-cruising on rivers, lakes, lochs, and estuaries, but some like coastal cruising, which can be a bit more adventurous. On occasions, any camp cruising can become challenging enough when the unexpected happens, perhaps a turn of the weather bringing fog, or a change of wind direction, or stronger winds than forecast, or even calms.

Frank Dye’s exploits helped popularise the Wayfarer, particularly for cruising. She has become the iconic cruising dinghy. She’s very popular with members of the Dinghy Cruising Association. Only today, via an email, my attention was drawn to three YouTube videos featuring a Wayfarer in Scottish waters. (First to third link inclusive.)

Much of the content of this blog is about small sailboats used for cruising, but there is also a fair amount about racing yachts. My primary interest has been with small sailing boats suited to cruising, exceptions being larger, spectacular vessels such as the trimarans featured in yesterday’s article. Typical of the smaller ones are Matt Layden’s Paradox, Sven Yrvind’s Bris, and cruising dinghies such as Eric Coleman’s Roamer, Ian Proctor’s Wayfarer and John Welsford’s dinghy with a lid, Scamp.

There are many types of small sailing craft that have been designed primarily for cruising; the list is almost endless. Success in cruising them has been more to do with their owners ability than their designs. Acrohc Australis, designed and built by Serg Testa, remains the smallest boat to have circumnavigated the Globe, having completed a 27,000 nautical miles marathon in May, 1987. 

Long distance cruising is not the most popular option; the major preference is for coastal and estuary cruising with outings seldom lasting more than a weekend. Choices and preferences often depend upon circumstances. A retired couple, for example, might want to sail their yacht further afield, as they have acquired the means and have the time, but a young working couple can perhaps only find time for the occasional weekend.

Whatever the circumstances, each will try to make the best of their opportunities.

FOR SALE: DCA ROAMER CRUISING DINGHY, Daisy

A rare opportunity to buy a well-made example of this famous self-righting 14ft cruising dinghy designed by Eric Coleman, one of the founders of the DCA, and featured in his book Dinghies for All Waters. He took his inspiration from ballasted sail and oar lifeboats with raised buoyant ends, as seen elsewhere in this issue of Dinghy Cruising.

     Daisy was launched in Summer 2011, and has been sailed infrequently since. The builder worked from DCA plans supplied by Peter Bick, and she was some seven years in build. The hull was not made using the stitch and tape method but exactly as the original, with chine log / frame construction, which results in a very tough plywood boat.

      I have been asked by the builders widow to advertise Daisy in Dinghy Cruising. You should also find details on Bill Serjeants popular blog by the time you read this: http://bills-log.blogspot.com  There is a pdf available on the Roamer design on Bills site, and I have a copy I can send by return of email should you have any difficulty. Roamer is a dedicated cruising boat: with her centreplate up she is self-righting from 120 below vertical, and has lots of stowage. Her appearance is unusual, but as her designer remarked wryly, she is reminiscent of Columbuss carrack.  Keith Muscott

It was raining heavily at times while I was photographing the boat, so these shots could have been a lot better.

Non-slip floorboards go over the storage space above the cockpit sole, which is kept dry using a substantial bilge pump (left of main hatch).

She is not Bermudan rigged, as designed, but has gunter spars in Douglas Fir.

Once again, I’m grateful to a follower of this blog for pointing me to a small sailboat website, namely that of Liz Baker’s Cormorant sailing dinghy pages.* She is a longstanding member of the Dinghy Cruising Association who has organised many or their South Coast gatherings. In 1973 Chuck Paine designed and had built for himself a 28’ double-ender. in his own words, ‘She was to embody everything I knew about the design of efficient cruising vessels of GRP construction, to be capable of yearly cruises to and among the Caribbean Islands, to be small enough to fit my limited budget yet large enough to survive a gale at sea. She is small enough for me to handle the little maintenance required with GRP construction, capable of being laid up alongside a local lobstermans wharf on an outgoing tide for periodic attention to the bottom.’

Since then he has designed many yachts* and he has received worldwide acclaim** for his work.
