After a small delay to the start due to lack of wind, the fleet are on the last leg of the RNI to Auckland. 360 odd nautical miles rounding East Cape then the final sticky outy bit being Colville before finishing in Waitemata Harbour. 

Our Wellington friends Wedgetail had an engine issue as they were attempting to get out of their berth - a drive pin falling out and the boat needing to be cradled for it to get sorted.  No doubt a bit full on and having to worry about the tide as well with Wedgie drawing more than many of the competitors and Napier not being known as a deep water chanel or marina when the tide is out. 

They joined the fleet some hours later to not only catch up but start passing some of their sailing colleagues.  Well done Bex and Meric. 

Tony and Rob have been advised by Mike Quilter, Volvo Ocean racing legend and one of the best navigators in the world, to vacuum pack their downwind sails for this leg. Its looking mostly uphill to the finish.

The boys finished first in sunny light aired Napier. Well done Tony and Rob! A range of conditions from a light air start, to a park up, to 35 knots on the nose and finishing in light airs. A great race. Boys about to enjoy a breakfast at the Napier Sailing Club. Breakfast looks amazing as usual by the dedicated crew of NSC.

Boat Plans Stitch And Glue

An idyllic day for ice creams and the start of the third leg of the RNI. Very light winds were spurred on by the sea breeze making for a good but slowish start by the fleet and a small park up in Kau Bay. Blink unfurled her code 0 and started to pick off the fleet in very light winds being just behind Bushido who got away in clear air a little sooner.

Several Wellington support boats followed the fleet to the heads wishing the fleet fair winds and safe journeys. 

A big thank you to Dave and Anna Roberts for taking out the good ship Jacqueline. Jacqueline used to be owned by the builder of Blink, Mr Craig Partridge.

Blink is all stocked up with provisions and out in Doubtless Bay for the RNI Leg 2 start. Dolphins in the harbour and gentle zephyrs. 58 mins to the start. Im lucky to be on the committee boat for the start - a lovely big cruiser called Ocean Pearl.

Update - race delayed by an hour due to the sea breeze fighting the land breeze equaling no breeze!!

Update - breeze spilling in and start looking to be 1230.

Blink first across the line. Awesome effort by the boys and also Montego Bay IIIs crew Simon and Matty for taking out first on PHRF. Great club reception by all the wonderful volunteers at Mangonui Cruising Club and SSANZ team for working tirelessly to feed, water and transport everyone all day.  Thank you also to all the mooring owners who have shifted their boats to look after the RNI fleet.

Restart is high noon with a briefing at 9am.

Big Welly leg coming up. Jono of Midnight Express told us that this will be his 30th time down the West Coast!

Buy "Belle Ile". A 1995 steel, 33 M.B.C.C model. (Modern British Channel Cutter). Presently located in the Canaries Island . She can take you to the Carribbean where I understand it is warm now! There is still time before the hurricane season. I am waiting for more information, meantime I can tell you that the asking price is 58KE.

I have just received more pictures of the boat.
I designed Belle-Ile to re- create in a different way the nostalgic era of the Norwegian Rescue Fleet so well rendered by Colin Archer and so many others. The type of boats that shaped my life at an early age. I was enamoured by Jacques-Yves Le Toumelins  Kurun and the account of his voyage around the world. I must have been 12 years old at the time and in Boarding School. Not fun. When I got the book, I just could not separate myself form reading it again and again. To such an extent that I stole it from the School Library and still is in my possession.

The design quirk is the treatment under the hull. I designed twin keels with the thought that it could more efficient than a traditional long keel. She was one of the first one with such a feature.

The interior is "cozy", particularly for a couple and the occasional guest. All in all a fine vessel with tradition in mind in a timeless sense.

The Sail Plan is of a cutter with a double headsails configuration, and added sail area under the form of a spinnaker/reacher for light air and downwind legs. The mast location has the particularity to seat literally in the middle of the boat, allowing for a smaller mainsail and more power to the fore triangle.

Great start to the RNI in some breeze and a gentle but warm little tropical shower with the sun poking through. Blink in clear air with a nice conservative start given 500 odd miles to Welly. Beaut day for a glamour sail to the Cape and down the west coast to Welly. Fantastic!!!!
